Together, we’ll build the perfect card base, cut and layer shimmering panels for depth and dimension, and then focus on the heart of the design—the hand-tangled ornament.

Using a black fine liner pen, soft pencil shading, smooth blending, and glowing chalk highlights, I’ll show you how you can tangle using basic strokes to bring  your ornament to life with a Zentangle®-inspired touch that feels both relaxing and festive. Along the way, you’ll learn how to balance your layers, where to add a bold sentiment, and how to assemble everything into a polished holiday keepsake.

Tangled Christmas Card Tutorial

Supplies I used:
Card Cuts:
  1. Card Base: 4 1/4" x 11" – score at 5 1/2"
  2. Iridescent Mirror Panel: 4 1/4" x 5 1/2"
  3. Black Cardstock Panel: 4 1/8" x 5 3/8"
  4. Bristol Panel: 4" x 5 1/4"

Step-by-Step Instructions - Written
To get all the details make sure you watch the Video!
  1. Prepare Your Card Base
    • Cut your Bristol cardstock to 4 1/4" x 11".
    • Score along the 11" side at 5 1/2" and fold to create your card base.
  2. Cut & Layer Your Panels
    • Trim the iridescent mirror cardstock to 4 1/4" x 5 1/2".
    • Cut the black cardstock to 4 1/8" x 5 3/8".
    • Cut the Bristol cardstock to 4" x 5 1/4".
    • Set aside for layering later.
  3. Stamp the Ornament
    • On the Bristol panel, we will first sketch a circle, this will be our guide for our ornament and where we will start tangling or orbs (Tangle: Jetties)
  4. Add Shading
    • With a pencil, lightly add shading to the tangled sections of your ornament.
    • Blend softly with a blending stump to create smooth gradients.
  5. Add Highlights
    • Use a General’s pastel chalk pencil to add highlights to areas of your ornament.
    • This creates contrast and a soft glow effect, making your tangle look dimensional.
  6. Stamp the Sentiment
    • Choose a festive sentiment from Desiree Tangles with Paper.
    • Stamp it in VersaFine black ink onto the Bristol panel, balancing your layout with a Mat of Black cardstock and then the Iridescent Mirror Cardstock.
  7. Assemble the Layers
    • Adhere the Bristol panel (with your tangled ornament and sentiment) onto the black cardstock panel using liquid glue.
    • Mount this onto the iridescent mirror panel.
    • Finally, glue the entire layered piece to your card base.
  8. Finishing Touches
    • Hold the card at different angles to admire how the iridescent panel reflects light around your hand-tangled design.
    • Add any optional embellishments if desired (a touch of glitter, gel pen accents, or enamel dots), but let the tangled ornament remain the star.
